In-Character Information

Name: Papyrus
Game/Series: Undertale
Canon Point: Post True Pacifist end
Age & Birthday: Though not stated, most theorize that based on his Undernet user name “COOLSKELETON95” that he is either 15 or 24. He is able to legally drive a car, so I’m going with 24. Birthday is October 13.
Dorm or Living Arrangement: Wherever he’s assigned, though if there are other Undertale characters eventually, they will make a group house for sure.
House: Gunner. Bullet bones whee!

Personality: One’s first impression of Papyrus would probably lead them to believe that he is merely loud, egotistic, and a bit dumb. While he certainly leaves an…impression on those he encounters, Papyrus is so much more than his first impression gives.
Papyrus is the most optimistic monster in the entire underground. He not only fully believes in himself with no doubts, he even believes that Frisk is capable of anything, or in the case of a Genocide run, believes that they can pull themselves out of their murderous rampage and be a good person, even as he’s killed! In a pacifist run, he continuously states that Frisk and Undyne would be great friends, despite the latter claiming to hate Frisk, humans, and wanting them dead so monsters can finally be free.
Papyrus’ biggest dream is to be a member of the Royal Guard, and he trains religiously so that he can be. He wants nothing more in the world than to be a Royal Guard that he went to Undyne’s, captain of the guard’s, house in the middle of the night to ask to join. She kicked him out, but, when she woke up the next day, he was still standing in her yard, asking to be a member. This dream and determination to fulfill it drives the majority of Papyrus’ actions, and fuels his dedication to his work as a sentry on the lookout for fallen humans. He’s positive that if he captures one he’ll finally be allowed in the Royal Guard.
However, despite all his determination, Papyrus is just too nice for such work, even stated so by Undyne. Instead of capturing Frisk, he becomes friends with them, and in the case of a Genocide run, pleads with them to be the good person he knows they can. In fact, he is the only enemy, boss or regular that will not kill you. Despite his excellent command of magic attacks, he’s very careful never to take them too far, and certainly has no killing intent, unlike his brother (fought in a Genocide route). He will instead “capture” you if he gets you down to 1 health in his fight. The “prison” he’s constructed for captured humans is his shed with a dog bed, a food dish with dog food in it (and if you get captured again, added cut up hot dog.), and bars that are too far apart so it is easily escaped. Upon “escape” (walking out and back to where you fight him), Papyrus expresses that he was worried where Frisk went, and if captured and escaped twice more, he catches on and asks if they really just like him that much. In his fight, he’s easily won over with flirting, and meeting all his standards by saying you can cook spaghetti or that you have no redeeming values.
Papyrus is the polar opposite of his older brother, Sans. Where Sans is messy, Papyrus is tidy. Where Sans is lazy, Papyrus has unlimited energy. Where Sans is soft spoken and subtle, Papyrus is loud and direct. Papyrus is easily frustrated by Sans’ behavior, so, of course Sans eggs him on like a good brother would. He also hates puns because they’re a waste of time, yet he finds them funny and hates that even more, so of course, Sans makes tons when they’re together. Despite their clashes, or rather, one sided frustrations, Papyrus loves his brother and will do anything to protect him, and it’s the same for Sans.
Since he’s too nice for the Royal Guard, Undyne has been giving Papyrus cooking lessons, and he’s eager to show off at any opportunity. Like all his ventures, Papyrus puts his all into his cooking, even though he only cooks one thing- spaghetti. He loves it, and his fridge is full of it. However, based on the spaghetti he makes for Frisk in the game, and other plates of spaghetti he leaves out, it’s not good at all. He insists it’s amazing, and that Frisk was just being thoughtful to his feelings, hunger, and amazed by his culinary creations rather than finding it gross. Later on, when Frisk gets a cooking lesson with Undyne, who has been teaching Papyrus to cook, it becomes more apparent why his spaghetti is so…unique. Punching vegetables to make sauce and stirring raw spaghetti noodles while on fire does not a good dish make.
Papyrus loves puzzles, and is quite proud of the ones he’s constructed outside of Snowdin town. He has many advanced puzzle mechanic books and is eager to help Frisk with puzzles on their journey.
A common misconception is that Papyrus is dumb because of the way he acts. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Papyrus might be very passionate about things, to the point of obsession, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t care or know what’s going on around him. He may be a worrier when it comes to those he cares about, but only because he cares so much. He invests a lot of himself into his relationships because every friend he has (despite claiming to not be popular or have friends) because he values said relationships like the greatest treasures. A lot of Sans’ dialogue, especially in the “SAVE the world” segment is very characteristic of a sufferer of depression, and even suicidal thoughts. It’s of my personal opinion that Papyrus is so constantly optimistic and upbeat because it’s the only way he knows how to help Sans. He is constantly pushing Sans to go to work and do things because he knows it’s good for his mental health. He tries so hard to get Undyne to be friends with Frisk because she has such an aggressive personality that it’s possible she doesn’t have many friends of her own. He helps with Alphys by getting her jogging while shouting about how great she is to boost her confidence. (Sans is much better at getting away from that.) He knows that those around him have problems that can’t be solved like puzzles, but he tries his best regardless because he cares for and loves all his friends, and would never want them to hurt themselves. He’s observant of their behaviors and moods, and never pushes them too hard. He knows when to back off, such as when he lets Alphys go home after 20 seconds of jogging, though, he’s still worried for her, and sends Frisk to go check to see that she’s all right. In the end, he’s the one who calls all the major characters that Frisk meets through their journey to come help them at the barrier, though he was instructed to by Flowey, he did so without a second thought, because he knew his dear friend needed help and was determined to do all he could to do so.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
Optimism- Papyrus is ridiculously optimistic. He doesn’t believe in failing or giving up, and contends that everyone has the capacity to be a good person, no matter what the circumstances.
Passionate- Papyrus is extremely passionate about all his interests, especially his puzzle skills and cooking ability. In his mind, he’s clearly the best at said skills.
Compassionate- Papyrus cares for everyone around him. Despite wanting to be in the royal guard, he’s far too kind to seriously hurt anyone, though he is skilled in combat.
Overconfident- Papyrus thinks he’s the best at everything he does, even if it’s the first time he’s done it. So far, it really only effects his cooking. His only dish, spaghetti is….unique.
Oblivious- Papyrus, whether it be by choice or not, can be oblivious of the bigger picture. If the events going on have nothing to do with him or his quest to be a royal guards man, then he doesn’t pay much attention to them, even not grasping the predicament that Frisk finds themselves in as they approach Asgore.
Too Nice- Because of his compassionate nature, Papyrus gives out his trust and friendship too easily and quickly, and, both Flowey and Chara have taken deadly advantage of that.
Backstory: CANON LINKS- Papyrus True Pacifist Route
Papyrus was born and grew up in the Underground, the prison humanity banished monsters to after a long war. He was raised by his brother, Sans, and now takes care of him, as he’s gotten so lazy, he claims, though, it’s more likely depression. He wanted to join the King’s Royal guard, but, the captain, Undyne, felt he was too nice. He never gave up trying to get in, though, so, she gave him a sentry station to watch for fallen humans. Then it happened. One day a human child emerged from the ruins. He had a great time giving them puzzles to solve, and even became good friends with them! He helped them with phone support further on their journey, and also helped them make friends with Undyne herself. He showed up in person to help his human friend face the monster king, and, with the other friends they had made, was captured and soul absorbed by Flowey/Asriel. His soul would have remained lost forever, if not for the determination of the human, Frisk. He, and all the other monsters were freed after Asriel broke the barrier keeping the monsters trapped, and, he began a new life on the surface, as monster kind’s mascot. Papyrus is last seen driving a convertible down a highway, followed, and passed by Sans on a tricycle motorbike. What he’s unaware of, however, is that his exit will be landing him on the islands!
Anything Else?: Anything and everything he says, does, or types is in Papyrus font. No exceptions.

In-Character 1st person sample:
[The bass is heard before a super awesome convertible pumping some sick tunes pulls up, seemingly from nowhere.]
Nyeh? Wait just a minute! This! Looks nothing like the human/monster school of excellence! The Human Frisk! And Monster Kid! It’s my turn to pick them up! Tori’s going to be so angry!!!! I’ll be burnt to a crisp!

[He takes a minute to frantically dig through his glovebox, retrieving a large roadmap with markings all over it.] Hmm! No, I was right! I took the correct exit off the highway! Sans! SAAAANS! Did you turn on one of your shortcuts again?! I swear, if you’ve turned us to another diner…Sans?

SANS! [Now might be the time to start panicking, because skelebro is nowhere in sight, and he had just been right there.] Sans! Where are you?! Come out this instant! [He hops out of his car and starts frantically checking the bushes.] We’re all ready late as it is!

In-Character 3rd person sample:
*This is a 3rd person I wrote for route 29, thus the being human and all.*

“NYYYYEEEEHHH!” Papyrus yawned, shuffling his way to the kitchen. No morning could start properly without freshly brewed milk tea- good for the bones and teeth, and certainly not apt to stain like coffee. He reached for his always clean mug, only to find it not hanging neatly on the mug rack next to the refrigerator like always, and in fact, he found the entire kitchen was not as he had left it the night before…it was someone else’s entirely!

“Awake all ready, Papyrus?” a calm voice asked from behind him.
“WHAT IS THIS MEANING OF THIS?!” Papyrus demanded, whirling around and pointing wildly at the woman who had appeared behind him. “HOW COULD YOU HAVE CAPTURED THE GREAT PAP-“ he stopped mid-sentence. Something was incredibly wrong, and it wasn’t just the strange house and woman anymore!
“M-MY ARM!!! MY BODY! MY FAAAAACE!!!!!!” Papyrus’ screams grew louder with each discovery. What once had been bone and magic was now flesh and blood! He even felt hair brushing on his head as he flailed about. While it was one thing he could be happy about in the situation, the rest was far too horrifying to allow him to enjoy it. The strange woman, however, remained calm, a smile plastered on her face.

“Now, now, you should save your energy for your journey!” she said, shoving a backpack into Papyrus’ chest, and with some unimaginable strength, right out the front door, which she quickly slammed behind him.
“WHA- BUT!” it was no use. As quickly as she had made herself known, she was gone. But, that wasn’t important at all.
“WHAT’S HAPPENED TO MY BEAUTIFUL BODY???” he shouted to the heavens. It probably looked really cool, but he couldn’t tell from being the one doing it. He’d seen it enough on the anime that he’d watched with Undyne and Alphys to know to trust it. He fell to his (newly padded) knees, slamming his fists on the ground in frustration. After all, if he was going to shout cooly to the heavens above, he had to follow through. Coolness aside, he needed to figure out what had happened to him, and, more importantly, what had happened to his friends and his brother!
“YOU MAY HAVE WON THIS ROUND, HUMAN LADY….BUT, THE GREAT PAPYRUS NEVER BACKS DOWN FROM A CHALLENGE! I’LL GET MY PROPER BODY BACK AND SAVE MY FRIENDS FROM YOUR EVIL GRASP!” A new goal, even more important than joining the Royal Guard! Papyrus was ready…but was the rest of Jhoto?
